At Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria, a lion murders the zookeeper

An unfortunate incident involving one of the lions in his charge claimed the life of the zookeeper at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Nigeria.

The institution claims that Olabode Olawuyi, who had been employed at the zoo for nearly ten years, was attacked during a regular feeding session.

They could not spare Olawuyi from the savage attack because one of the lions killed him despite the attempts of his comrades to step in and help.

University reaction

Since then, university officials have put the lion that was involved in the unfortunate incident to death, protecting zoo employees and guests alike.

“Taking care of the lions since they were born on campus about nine years ago” was the zookeeper’s description, since she was a veterinary technician.

According to Abiodun Olarewaju, the university’s public relations officer, “we never knew what came over the male lion that it had to attack [him],” the BBC reported.

The zookeeper had neglected to close the door after feeding, according to Abbas Akinremi, the leader of the university students’ union, who told Nigeria’s Vanguard newspaper that “human error” was to blame for the attack.

Reactions on social media

The tragedy at the university in Osun state, southwest Nigeria, has become the topic of major social media trends, with many Nigerians uploading graphic photographs of the incident.

It’s reported that the campus community went into sorrow after learning about the tragedy.

To offer consolation, the institution dispatched a team to the deceased’s family.

Prof. Adebayo Simeon Bamire, the vice-chancellor of the institution, expressed his sadness at the occurrence and directed a comprehensive inquiry “into the immediate and remote causes of the incident.”
